Speaker profile

Jas Shemar

Assistant Headteacher (Behaviour for Learning; Alternative Provision)
Saltley Academy

I have been working in education for 12 years. In that time, I have taken on a variety of different roles at Saltley Academy, including Head of Dept. for Citizenship, Assistant Headship for Personal Development and Wellbeing and most recently, leadership for Behavior including Alternative Provision. I played a pivotal role for the school in achieving the Rights Respecting Gold award in 2018 as well as raising the profile of Mentoring in Violence Prevention programme throughout the last two years. I also managed and co-ordinated the curriculum in the ‘Great British School Swap’ that was aired on Channel 4 earlier this year. It has been incredibly rewarding in going the extra mile for our young people whose upbringing could have been subject to a range of adverse childhood experiences and I a firm believer that as educators, we can make a huge difference to the lives of children across Birmingham so that they can have an equal opportunity at becoming successful citizens who are able to positively impact the communities that they live in.
