Matt Whiteley has been Headteacher of Batchley First School in a deprived area of Worcestershire, since 2006. The school, based in Redditch, has grown in many ways during that time. It has continued to grow in numbers to now be a 2-form entry school, and whilst serving an area of high deprivation, has an embedded fully inclusive culture, despite being in one of the lowest funded authorities in the country. The school attracts a number of children who are out of catchment from challenging backgrounds. This reflects the ethos created through the years of his headship. His personal passion for sport has ensured the school has developed an excellent reputation for practice in this area.
Matt is a wholly person centred headteacher. This means that his management style allows people to develop their own passions to the benefit of all children. The approach ensures a wide range of skills and activities, from the Arts to sport, which are offered to all. From Since 2016, the school has been commissioned to provide Early Years Language classes across the north of the county, which have won two National awards this year.
